The Gonzaga Bulldogs aren’t used to struggling at home. But after scoring just 15 points in the first 12 minutes of its game against the Portland Pilots, “struggling” might actually be a kind description.
It didn’t take long for them to get their act together, though.
A 20-2 propelled the Bulldogs to a 20-point halftime lead, and enabled them to cruise in the second half of a 76-49 victory. The win was sorely needed after they suffered a shocking loss 81-77 loss at San Francisco on Saturday.
Despite the poor start, Gonzaga ended up shooting 50 percent from the field for the game, led by Matt Bouldin’s 8-for-14 effort en route to a game-high 20 points. Eleven of the 13 players who saw minutes in the contenst scored at least two points. Conversly, Portland shot just 36 percent from the floor and went 11 of 22 from the free throw stripe.
The Zags travel east for an oddly-scheduled nonconference matchup at Memphis on Saturday. It presents an opportunity for both teams, and it is the last time either will have a chance to grab a win over a team with name-recognition nationally, even if Memphis isn’t at the same level this season as in years past. A win should cement Gonzaga’s spot in the NCAA Tournament if it doesn’t win the WCC tournament.
